Gatundu Market Association committee has written a letter to the Kiambu County government requesting modernisation of Kamwangi market.

The letter read by Michael Mwangi, the association's chairman, said the market officials demand establishment of better structures in the market, claiming that Kamwangi market is the only one in the county that has not been face lifted, despite the traders paying taxes to the county government.

Speaking on Thursday morning during a six member committee meeting at Kamwangi Social Hall, the members lamented poor sanitation, structures, lack of a sewerage system and harassment by county askaris.

"We are demanding that the county fulfills its promise of modernisation of our market before the end of January 2016. This is the only market that has not and I repeat has not received any county developmental assistance. The county has despite receiving our taxes consistently been less thoughtful about our sanitation and development," read part of the letter.

Mwangi noted that market has for the last three years been receiving little assistance from CDF kitty, claiming that the existing toilets at the market were built during the leadership of Clement Waibara.

"We will from February next year stop paying taxes to the county if the above requests will not be implemented," further read the letter.

"It has taken us a lot of patience, enduring the market challenges we experience each day. It’s now time to act and demand services from the leadership we chose," said Mwangi.

The meeting held after consultations among market traders was aimed at airing issues affecting the market.
