Kiambu County Agriculture and Livestock CeC Dr Monicah Waiganjo has encouraged farmers to farm macadamia nuts saying the crop is profitable.
Speaking in Gatundu North on Saturday when she handed de-husking equipment to Magicha Group that practices macadamia farming, Waiganjo said the county government will support farmers who are willing to venture into macadamia farming.
She said the county has a favorable climate that supports growing of the nuts.
Waiganjo said that very few farmers are growing the crop despite it being a profitable venture.
“We want to encourage farmers to practice and embrace macadamia nuts farming if they want to gain profits from farming,” she said.
Dr Waiganjo said that the county is working on establishing markets for farmers who grow macadamia nuts.
The Kiambu Agriculture executive said farmers will be trained and sensitised on how to grow the crop, adding that the Kiambu government is keen to boost agriculture and livestock farming for development.
She encouraged farmers to attend training sessions that are being conducted by the county government and stakeholders on agriculture and livestock farming.
Farmers growing macadamia nuts in Gatundu North cited fluctuation of prices as the main challenge facing the crop.
They asked the government to regulate the prices and deal with unscrupulous business people who they accuse of swindling them.
