As many youths continue to grapple with unemployment problem in Thika East and Kenya as whole, a group of youths in Kilimambogo have found a way to keep life moving.
The group, Fourteen Falls Guides, wakes up daily and head to Athi River where the famous Fourteen Falls are found, and it is from here that they are able to put a meal on their tables every evening.
The group's chairman Moses Wanyoike speaking at the area on Thursday, said their work involves offering tour guide services to tourists visiting the site, giving boat rides, photography work, helping tourists navigate the river as well as helping visitors through nature walks.
"All these activities are the ones that help us earn something at the end of the day. The group has ten members who are involved in various activities", said Wanyoike.
He, however, noted that their job has a myriad of challenges and it takes determination and perseverance to cope with them.
"All is not rosy here but we have kept the wheel rolling. For instance, like the now the river is full as a result of the ongoing rains and our river activities have been greatly hampered. A rope like the one you see across the river was put here when the water in the river increased to help our boats' crew navigate the river safely," said Wanyoike.
Other challenges, the chairman said include low number of tourists during weekdays as well as the risks they have to expose themselves to when at the vast river.
Wanyoike's advice to fellow youngsters is that they should embrace opportunities around them and turn them to fortunes.
"Nothing good comes on a silver platter. One has to struggle hard bearing in mind that even the sweetest of the roses is found among thorns", stated Wanyoike.
