The Anti-Female Genital Mutilation Board chairperson Linah Jebii Kilimo has urged politicians to join the war against FGM.
Addressing the media in Eldoret town on Sunday after meeting a group of women, Kilimo accused politicians of being silent on the cultural practice which she said continues to be practiced in many areas.
The chairperson said the war on FGM and other traditional cultural practices will be won if politicians and elected leaders support the fight.
“Cases of FGM and other practices that demean women and girls will end if elected leaders and more so politicians support the fight against the vices,” she said.
Ms Kilimo said much needs to be done in terms of awareness campaigns in eliminating FGM.
She said many areas especially in Rift Valley, parts of Central and Eastern Kenya still practice FGM.
She observed that the practice of FGM and forced marriages has denied many girls access to education and other opportunities.
The Anti-FGM Board chairperson urged leaders to partner with the Board in eliminating the practices.
Kilimo said that her organisation has partnered with other government agencies including the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to fight FGM.
