The Anti-Female Genital Mutilation Board chairperson Jebii Kilimo has warned health workers in Gusii region perpetuating the vice to shun or risk arrest and prosecution.

Kilimo said any medical practitioner found taking part in the illegal act will be punished accordingly, stating that the minimum punishment for such an illegal act is not less than three years in jail.

She spoke in Nyamira on Tuesday during the pass out ceremony of 120 girls aged between nine and 15 years who have been undergoing training from the Vilbel Foundation on alternative rites of passage.

The former Marakwet East MP, however, said she was impressed with the number of parents who brought their children for the training, adding that it was an indication that the war on FGM is gaining ground.

She also noted that statistics show that FGM stands at 98 per cent in Gusii region, and asked to meet with all the health workers in the county in a bid to reverse the trend.

On her part, Nyamira woman representative Alice Chae said her office will set aside funds to support the fight for women rights which include the war on FGM.

"God has been great and we now have the Affirmative Action Social Development Fund in which I am going to set aside 20 per cent of it to work on matters of gender based violence," she said.

The MP called on all residents to work together and look for a way forward.

Also present was Nyamira County Commissioner Josephine Onunga and the chief officer in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
