Kiriko residents have blamed the area chief over the re-emergence of brewing and consumption of illicit liquor, drugs and substance abuse in the area.
Speaking from Kiriko, a section of residents said alcoholism and drug abuse have reached alarming rates in the area.
They singled out police officers and administrators as part of the problem in the eradication of these vices, saying some own joint businesses with the brewers while others take bribes to protect the brewers.
They said although brewing had reduced due to the recent crackdown ordered in February last year through a presidential directive, local youth aged below 18 years fall for the cheap and readily available drugs and brews.
"Police are the major course of the re-emergence. They always roam taking bribes to help the outlawed liquor sellers continue with their businesses. We are watching," said Damaris Nyambura, a resident.
"It is discouraging to see the culprits arrested by the wananchi and handed over to the police set free before reaching the court. This is total bribery," said Anthony Ikua, a resident.
"I call on the government to take action against drunkard chiefs and their assistants, the fight against illicit brews and drugs will only succeed if the officers take their work seriously," said Muguthi Mugo a respected elder in Kiriko.
