Internally Displaced People in Kisii County have a reason to smile after Deputy President William Ruto ordered the Devolution Ministry to do a fresh audit and compensate them within two months.
This comes after an outcry by a section of Kisii leaders led by Deputy Governor Joash Maangi Who insisted that the resettlement process was opaque leading to hundreds of genuine beneficiaries from the region miss out on the government scheme to resettle them.
Speaking at Gusii stadium on Sunday, Mr Ruto said all persons who were displaced in 2007/08 PEV ought to be compensated without bias.
“I have been informed of your plight by your leaders and it’s disturbing that we still have IDPs in this region. Before I came, I had ordered officials from the devolution ministry to review the matter and compensate genuine beneficiaries in two months’ time. No one should be discriminated in this exercise because it the obligation of government to resettle its people,” he said.
The DP also ordered for review of IDPs who had been classified as integrated IDPs and have they paid their money fully.
“We are in the process of healing and we ought to move forward as a country. Those who were classified as integrated IDPs must be paid fully so that we close this chapter of IDPs,” he added.
He slammed opposition CORD for allegedly politicising fight against corruption and said the government had recovered millions from corrupt deals.
“We have specific institutions mandated to fight corruption and people know that. The opposition should stop politicising fight against corruption. As government, we have even fired a number of officials and recovered lost money,” he added.
