Kisumu County government released Sh100 million as bursary to support the needy and bright students within the county.

Governor Jack Ranguma said the funds will be used to support learning for the county’s bright but deserving students.

Ranguma said out of the money, Sh70 million will be administered at the ward level where each of the county’s 35 wards will receive Sh2 million.

He said the remaining Sh30 million will be given out by the county’s executive under the department of education.

The governor said the disbursement of the funds was part of his government’s plans to improve education standards and urged all deserving students to apply to be beneficiaries.

“We are committed to empowering our children through access to quality education," he said.

He however stressed that the issuance of the funds at the ward level must be done in a transparent manner.

Ranguma said in the 2014/15 financial year, a total of 9,070 students benefited from the scheme.
