Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria has opposed plans by the parliamentary leadership to spend Sh3 billion to pay MPs for the period their term will be cut short by the constitution.
In a press release, the lawmaker termed the proposal as ludicrous, selfish and unpatriotic.
“You will recall that MCAs want Sh5 billion for the same reason,” Kuria said in a prepared statement.
“If these 2 requests were to be granted, it would cost Wanjiku Sh8 Billion. If this amount was to be awarded as bursaries to needy day secondary school students, it would benefit 800,000 students with the full bursary of Sh10,000 each for one year. That would be an equivalent of 200,000 students on a full 4 year scholarship,” the MP said.
He went on to accuse fellow lawmakers of greed, saying: “This mindset of leaders trying to divide this country among themselves like hunted game has to come to an end. It is the constitution which imposed the date of the 2017 General Elections. Why punish Wanjiku for it?”
Kuria said he will continue to campaign through his Punguza Mzigo initiative that Kenya is overrepresented.
“When the proposal comes to the House I will move an amendment to reallocate the Sh8 billion to a national bursary fund and a special fund for improving infrastructure in our schools,” he said.
