Landlords have increased house rents without notifying tenants who reside in Mashimoni area opposite Amref Health Centre. They have claimed that monthly house rent in the area is low and this has made them not to get better profits from their investments hence the increment which will take effect from the 15th of this month.
Tenants will be forced to dig deeper into their pockets as compared to the last month’s payments.
“I had taken a loan from equity bank to build up rental houses which I have to repay before the agreed loan repayment period elapses as well as enjoy my efforts and hard work,” said Mama Priscah Mwaura, a land lady in the area.
She further said that 2 years ago since she build her rental houses, she has never enjoyed the rent money because she pays all the money to the bank to recover the loan she borrowed to build her houses and so the increased rent is not in any way related to the high living standards.
Some residents and tenants believe that the increase in rent is due to the poor performance of the country’s economy which has made even banks to increase interest rates.
Mr. Philip Mabuka, a Mashimoni resident says that previously, he used to pay Kshs. 2, 200 as house rent but during his next payment he will empty his pocket and pay Kshs. 3, 2oo and which is an increase of Kshs. 1, 000.
Residents have now also urged the landlords to improve on the drainage system in the area in order to avoid stagnant water which may lead to disease outbreak in the area and to also ensure security is tight too for the sake of their safety.
