Nakuru leaders have condemned the arrest of veteran journalist Elijah Kinaynjui over a post he shared on his Whattsup group.

The post, which entailed the lifestyle of governor Kinuthia Mbugua alleged daughter, saw him arrested by CID officers on Tuesday and spend the whole day behind bars.

The leaders took to the Nakuru Analyst Whattsup and Twitter platform to condemn the move.

National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Chairman Lee Kinyanjui termed the move as unfortunate.

“I wish to register my disgust over the arrest of Kinyanjui. An attack on the media is an affront to a free society,” Lee said.

NACADA chairman John Mututho said that the move was an indication that media within the county is not free.

“Why intimidate and harass journalist instead of dealing with the real issues that are affecting Nakuru people? This journalist has been key in highlighting and bringing out the issues of corruption and rot in the county government and this move was just meant to silence him,” Mututho said.

Kamara MCA John Gichamu called for more protection of journalists in the county.

“It is unfortunate that Even Bogonko Bosire, who hailed from my ward, disappeared and cannot be traced two years later. We need more laws to protect the journalists in the area,” Gichamu said.
