Kisii University Chaplain Fr Lawrence Nyaanga has said the increase in alcohol brewing and consumption in Kisii and other parts of the country are because of meager fines charged against offenders.

Addressing the press on Saturday in Kisii town, Fr Nyaanga challenged the Judiciary to increase fines.

“We ask the Judiciary to look into the fining of alcohol brewers. How can you expect to reduce or end alcohol business in the community if you fine an offender just Sh4,000? he asked.

Father Nyaanga called on the provincial administration to support the fight against alcoholism.

“We lack enough support from the chiefs and their assistants in the fight against the alcohol business in the community."

“Chiefs should be in the forefront in the war, I ask them to join hands with us so that we can end alcoholism in the community."

The cleric advised those engaged in the business to have an alternative way of income generation.

He noted they are working with church leaders from other dominions in the war against chang’aa and other abused drugs in the community.
