Kisii County deputy governor Joash Maangi's political future is in jeopardy yet again after an angry mob besieged him on Friday at Riokindo, chanting anti-slogans and demanding that he quits the Orange Democratic Party (ODM).
The supporters who seemed agitated by Maangi’s continued collaboration with the Jubilee government labeled him a traitor and called for a disciplinary action from the ODM party headquarters as they demanded that he declare his political stand.
One of the ODM supporters questioned the deputy governor's motives of leading a delegation of residents to DP William Ruto’s home in Sugoi early last month, amidst tension from the mob.
''We are not opposed to you being a deputy governor but it’s our concern that you strike deals with the national government in the name of the community. Do you even have an answer to why you took a delegation to Sugoi?'' asked Peter Mayaka, one of the residents in the area.
ODM Bomachoge Borabu Youth secretary-general, James Magaki, urged Maangi to retire from politics terming him a political greenhorn who did not have the interests of people at heart.
''I think the deputy governor has some vested interests and it’s my humble prayer that he retires. As the ODM family, we have advised the governor to get rid of him or we shall send the both of them home in 2017,'' he said.
Maangi defended his actions saying he was open to work with all leaders regardless of their parties and maintained he was in ODM to stay.
''It’s unfair that I am condemned for associating with the national government for the sake of development. I am ready to work with all leaders regardless of their political affiliations and that is the modern politics. I am in ODM to stay and whoever wants me out should leave first,'' said Maangi.
