Contractors working as casual labourers on Tuesday demonstrated to Machakos county offices demanding for payment after months of false promises.

The workers were granted a contract by the Machakos county government to build gutters in rivers in different locations.

Among the demonstrators were those working in rivers in Mua, Mutituni and Yiini areas.

Speaking on Tuesday outside Machakos county headquarters, Josphat Mutinda a contractor stated that they had completed their work in October 2015.

"We have been coming here severally and promised that we will be paid soon but nothing has been done. Our children have been sent home for fees while the government holds our money," said Mutinda.

More than 150 casual labourers participated in the peaceful demonstrations. However, speaking later, on Tuesday evening, the Machakos county Minister of Water, Kioko Luka assured payments would be done before Thursday this week.

"The payments have been delayed due to financial processes from the Central Bank of Kenya but now we are ready to pay the contractors around Machakos town by Thursday and the rest might be paid by weekend," he added.
