Traders at Makongeni open-air market in Thika have blamed the ongoing rains for the losses they are making now.
Speaking on Monday at the market, the traders partly blamed the heavy rains in the area which they said are accelerating rotting of their goods.
"Though rains are a blessing from God, I have to admit that I am making more losses than I was doing before the onset of the rains," Moses Githaiga, a cabbage trader said.
John Waweru said: "When I buy tomatoes from my supplier during the dry weather, they can last up to a week or more before showing any signs of going bad. This is not the case now".
Others think that the county government hasn't done enough to help them.
"If this market was well sheltered, our vegetables wouldn't be rained on and therefore would not rot that easily," said Teresiah Waithera.
On Friday, Jane Wangunyu who is the chairperson of the market, called on the county government of Kiambu to modernise the market to ensure that traders minimise losses.
"Traders who deal with perishables have also been incurring heavy losses. A complete modernisation of this market would be much better," Wangunyu told this writer.
