Makwa residents have appealed to the area police to ensure that owners of bars flouting the rules on the set alcohol selling time are dealt with severely.

Speaking to press on Tuesday, the residents said that majority of the youth in the area were leading a future-less life due to excessive consumption of alcohol.

"Local pubs need strict monitoring since they are selling alcohol to the youth during the working hours which is against the law," said Maritha Muthoni, a resident.

"Urgent comprehensive measures ought to be formulated in order to swiftly remedy the situation which is transforming teens in Makwa town into alcoholics," said Boniface Kiringu, another resident.

The residents argued that some youth were seen lying in the verandas within town after taking alcohol early in the morning yet the sellers were not punished for flouting the regulation.

They took issue with the alcohol consumption explaining that that police were to blame for failure to apprehend the alcohol sellers flouting liquor rules and regulations.

According to area chief Martin Kiragu, alcohol elimination needed a concerted effort of not only leaders in the area but also residents.

He called on residents who have embraced the Nyumba Kumi initiative to join hands with the local administrators in identifying those contravening the alcohol laws by operating during odd hours or selling alcohol to underage.
