Uasin Gishu County Governor Jackson Mandago has threatened to withdraw free maternal services in hospitals in the county.
He said the services will be withdrawn unless the county government releases money meant for the service.
Speaking during the Jamuhuri Day Celebrations in Eldoret, Mr Mandago said that the county government does not have the funds to run free maternity and will soon start charging women for them to give birth in county hospitals.
"It is sad that despite the national government initiating the free maternity services, it has not channeled the funds to counties," he said.
"I urge the national government through the Ministry of Health to act at speed and save the situation before it runs out of hand."
He added the initiative by the national government to have free maternal services is good.
"If the national government wants pregnant women to give birth freely they must channel the funds with immediate effect," he said.
