Matatu drivers in Nakuru have appealed to the government to replace traffic officers with the National Transport Safety Association (NTSA) Officers.

The matatu drivers claimed that it was useless to have two different departments dealing with road issues.

“It is just a leeway for corruption as the drivers are forced to give bribes to every police spot and yet there is nothing important they do. NTSA has proven that it checks on the quality of the vehicles and of the drivers too," John Maina, a driver, said.

Maina pointed out that NTSA carried the exercise in a professional way.

“They even talk to drivers and advice them and counsel them, unlike the police who abuse and harass us. This is despite the fact that they also demand hefty bribes,” he added.

Peter Muchiri claimed  traffic policemen are not trained for the job.

“In most cases they just demand the driving licenses and look at it without paying any attention. Yet they are supposed to even ask when it expired and to check on the insurance. While inspecting the vehicles they are supposed to look inside and not just around it,” Muchiri said.
