Masinga Central Ward MCA Josphat Mwonga has denied claims the county government plans to start taxing churches.

Mr Mwonga said the county has no such plans and that the county government would consult the churches before implementing such a plan.

Speaking at the African Inland Church in Kithyoko location, Masinga sub county on Monday, Mr Mwonga said the allegations were baseless and that those peddling them were "enemies of the county government."

"Machakos county has God fearing leaders who respect all religions and recognise the important role of religion in the society and would not pass such a policy," explained Mr Mwonga.

He said there was no way the county government would impose taxes on people exercising the freedoms enshrined in the constitution.

Mwonga added that Kenya provides for freedom of worship in the Constitution and the county government would not interfere with that freedom.

He spoke as debate rages on on whether the government and devolved units should start taxing churches, which have in recent years mushroomed in the country.
