Nominated Member of County Assembly Esther Njeri Mengere has raised concern over the attempted suicide by the children who performed poorly in the recent Kenya Certificate for Primary Education examinations.
Speaking to the press in Nakuru on Wednesday, Mengere said that such children should be encouraged instead of condemned.
She added that some of them were already falling into depression
“We have counselled more than 200 students since the result came out. It is unfortunate that the society has been quick to condemn the children and yet some of them really studied hard for their examination,” she added.
Mengere pointed out that many of the children still needed hope and encouragement and that they could make it in life.
She appealed to church leaders to take up the issue and help the suffering children.
“They should be at the forefront of assuring this children that just because they failed in their papers, they are not useless. Otherwise we will be leading a nation of depressed children with serious self esteem issues,” she added.
