A mechanic along Kiambu road has this Monday morning lost his life after he was hit by a fast moving mini bus along Kiambu road after the driver lost control and went off the road and hit him at his mechanic work station in Thindigua.
According to survivors in the mini bus, the driver was chewing khat all along and he was mainly concentrating on the drug while driving. They said that the driver was also over-speeding at the bypass along the same road whereby he also almost hit a boda boda operator.
Mwangi Kiumuri, an eye witness at the garage said that as he was seated waiting for his boda boda to be repaired, he saw the minibus getting off the road at top speed and hitting the mechanic who was repairing his motorbike. He said that he was hit and died on the spot.
"The manner in which it hit him was horrible in that that surviving was very difficult; he died on the spot and the driver who hit him tried to escape after committing the offence but he wasn’t too lucky because an angry crowd caught him and even threatened to burn him,’’ said Kiumuri.
Kiambu OCPD SSP Stephen Ng’etich said that the man died on the spot and that they had arrested the driver who he termed as being reckless according to reports by eye witnesses. He also thanked members of the public who caught the driver as he attempted to escape.
"I want to warn drivers especially matatu operators against using any sought of drug when driving. This driver was chewing miraa and we've also found a paper bag full of the du just next to his seat. This is dangerous driving and it’s a very serious offence," said Ng’etich.
The body was taken to Kiambu District Mortuary.
