The hope of every student after completing school is to get employed, perhaps in one of the most reputable companies.
But a former Maseno University student has broken the notion and proved that somebody can actually begin life from anywhere.
Moses Tumbo, who graduated with a second class upper division degree in 2015 now sells sugarcane in Maseno town.
And what would surprise many, is the fact that he sells the sugarcane to his former colleagues in the institution.
“There are many untapped opportunities when it comes to business especially in Maseno," he told this writer on Monday.
"Life is about flexibility and how one can adjust to it separates the victors from losers. You just cannot seat home with your degree and wait things to happen," says Tumbo.
“I make up to Sh800 and Sh500 on a bad day which is plus for me. The business sustains me and I do not mind those who think this as dirty work. Some of the students I schooled do ridicule me but I turn a deaf ear to what they say for I know what is best for me.”
He however faces some challenges, one being that he has not secured a stall to do the business.
“I depend on the shadows along this road to Siriba. The source of the canes is a headache too for I incur extra charges for transport.”
He hopes in a year’s time his business will have grown and looks forward to being the main supplier of cane to both students and big companies.
The graduates were urged during their graduation ceremony by the acting Vice Chancellor Prof Joseph Chacha to be creative and use the knowledge acquired wisely.
