The plan by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to have teachers sign performance contracts has attracted mixed reactions in Nakuru County.
Whereas some teachers expressed satisfaction with the move, others dismissed it out rightly as 'needless'.
Tom Njogu, a tutor at Rhonda Primary School, was unequivocal that their service delivery could be reflected both in the national exams and termly tests subjected to pupils hence no need for annual appraisals.
"Such a move is not only ridiculous but equally uncalled for," he argued.
However, Risper Ndegwa from Koinange Primary said the move is quite in order since TSC is only executing its supervisory role.
"Personally I don't see any big deal with the planned move by the employer because it's their supervisory duties," she said.
In a new arrangement by the teachers employer, about 298,000 teachers will as from January 2016 be evaluated based on professional knowledge, its application, time management and teaching creativity.
TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia underscored the importance of the appraisals stating that they will be relied on to make decisions on promotions, deployment and training, among other related tasks.
