Nyamira politician Charles Mochama has terming ethnic politics as ‘primitive and naive’.

Mochana who was addressing a gathering on Monday at Mochenwa said he was disturbed with clan alignments ahead of 2017 polls saying residents were likely to vote ‘one of their own’ rather than genuine leaders.

He urged members of the public to shun leaders who were promoting clan politics and elect leaders based on their track record and achievement in social-economical platform.

“I really wonder about people persistently engaging in clan debate with political leaders capitalizing on it to choose their favorite candidates. Politics based on clan are primitive and naive and it’s upon us to choose leaders based on their track record. Politics of clan makes an entire population suffer from poor leadership,” he said.

According to Mochana, some leaders have succeeded in dividing Kenyans along ethnic lines, making it difficult for authorities to fight corruption.

“This issue of electing one of your own is hindering progress. It’s difficult for even authorities to effectively fight corruption because some leaders have hidden in their clans whenever they are mentioned in scandals for protection,” he added.

He said the county is likely to continue suffering if the residents succumbed to scheme of some leaders to divide them along clan lines.

“As long as we don’t say no to tribalism, we will continue suffering its really sad if some of us can’t believe in that myth of supporting one of their own. Nyamira is above that and its time for all of us to say no to tribalism,” he said.
