Ruiru MP Esther Gathongo has urged youths to register massively as voters.

Addressing worshipers at St Peter Catholic Church in Gatongora ward on Sunday, Ms Gathongo asked youth who have not collected their Identification Cards from their respective chief offices to do so to be able to take part in voter registration.

The MP said that voter registration is an important exercise that every patriotic citizen should take part in.

She said that it is through voting that the people can make the change they want by electing leaders who will address their problems.

“My appeal is to young people to massively come out and register as voters in the registration exercise that will be conducted by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) starting Monday,” she said.

The MP said that she will rally residents to register as voters in large numbers in readiness for the 2017 polls.

She said that the constitution provides for eligible citizens to take part in electoral processes.

Ms Gathongo urged IEBC to put in place measures that will ensure that many voters are registered.

The one month voter registration exercise begins on February 15 and will run until March 15, 2016.

The electoral commission targets to register 8 million new voters by the end of the exercise.
