Mobile money outlet agents in Kikuyu have on Wednesday been told to avoid closing their businesses late in the night following the increased cases of robbers targeting them.
This is after an Mpesa agent was on Tuesday night robbed Kshs. 112, 000 at 9:45pm by armed robbers after he closed his shop. The robbers are suspected to have been watching him for about 30 minutes before they attacked, robbed him and escaped.
Speaking from his office on Wednesday, the Kikuyu OCPD SSP Mutune Maweu said that cases of robbers targeting Mpesa agents was on the rise stating that this was the sixth report in 4 weeks. He said that some even close leaving huge sums of money in their shops which later ends up stolen.
The police boss said that it was advisable for these shops to begin closing by 6pm to avoid such cases. He affirmed that the police are going to intensify security in the areas in order to curb the menace.
"I want to advise Mpesa agent shop owners to consider closing their businesses by 6pm in order to curb the robbery menace. Meanwhile police patrols are going to be increased in all the areas as early as possible to ensure that these criminals can't perform their illegal acts," said Maweu.
