Police in Kisumu have asked the public to provide them with information on manufacturers of home-made guns, which are currently being used by criminals to terrorise residents.

The home-made guns, made out of simple metals and that can fire, have been the latest weapons that criminals use to scare, rob and even kill innocent residents.

The hunt comes in the wake of another home-made pistol recovered from a suspect who was shot dead and four rounds of ammunition recovered from him.

Kisumu Central OCPD Christopher Mshimba said Monday they pounced on the suspect at Orongo area next to Tosha petrol station following a tip off from a member of the public.

Mshimba said his source had alerted the police that there was someone who was planning to sell a home-made pistol to a customer at around 5pm on Sunday.

"My source told me that there was someone who was selling a gun and we decided to treat the matter in confidence and follow up the matter. We went there and when he tried to fire at us, the officers were fast enough and shot him," he said.

The police recovered the home-made gun with four rounds of ammunition and a cartridge of a bullet already spent when the suspect fired.

"The manufacturer might just be within Kisumu and that is why we are looking for him," said Mshimba.

He indicated that they have recovered at least 10 home-made guns within four months and that the trend is worrying.
