The National Authority for Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse has urged county governments to intensify the fight against illicit brews to promote development.
Speaking on Wednesday at a press conference in Naivasha town, Nacada chair John Mututho said despite efforts by his office to stem illicit brews in the country, most counties are still tolerating alcoholism.
Mututho blamed corruption for increased drug abuse and warned junior police officers against receiving bribes from bar owners to avoid arrests.
“We have realised that a majority of this illicit brew outlets are owned by those rendered untouchables in society making it very hard for our police to raid them or even open charges against them if arrested,” he said.
Mututho called on county police commanders to fast track the crackdown on the brews in their respective areas of operation to help achieve a sober society.
“As an authority, we cannot be everywhere. It is the responsibility of all of us to work in collaboration with law enforcers to ensure this problem is wiped out. Community efforts give a lasting solution,” he said.
He urged the Nakuru County Assembly to enact a law seeking to ban advertisement of alcoholic drinks in the region.
This will ensure everyone is held accountable under the law,” he added.
