Nakuru governor Kinuthia Mbugua has urged women to step up their efforts in participating in governance saying that their contribution was key in ensuring an all-inclusive society.
Speaking in his office on Tuesday afternoon after hosting Solai Women Group from Rongai sub county who paid him a courtesy call, Mbugua reiterated the county’s commitment to empowering women through initiating development projects aimed at making them self-reliant and independent.
He promised to help the group acquire a posho mill, quality grains and state of the art machinery that will ease their work and increase efficiency.
“As other county government empowerment programmes roll out during the next allocation, I have assured them, other women and youth groups that I will personally ensure that they are considered,” he said.
The governor further tasked the women to be ambassadors of the government saying that some groups were lacking such opportunities due to lack of knowledge.
Mbugua Foundation, Uwezo Fund and Women Enterprise Fund kitties are among the interest free grants that are at the disposal of any willing women group within the larger county and according to governor Mbugua, other than the grants, he is ready to personally support good initiatives aimed at making Nakuru an economic hub in the region.
Majority of groups that have previously benefited from the funds are success stories in their respective areas of specialisation but agriculture has been the most impressive with two groups from Kuresoi doing very well in dairy farming, with another one from Gilgil reaping big from rabbit farming.
Chairlady Rosemary Njoki was full of praises to governor Mbugua’s administration saying that such programmes were proof enough of his commitment to promoting the well-being of the girl child.
