There were skirmishes in Nakuru town on Monday afternoon following a demonstration by a group of youth and matatu operators demanding to know the plight of one of their own who they claimed disappeared on Wednesday last week.
The men who moved around Nakuru town in matatus had placards written;“We want Jose”, which is the moniker of one of the men who is alleged to have disappeared.
His full names are Joseph Chege and a wholesale businessman in Nakuru market. His colleague who was identified only as Shem, is also a businessman in Nakuru town.
The demonstrators were however turned back at the County Headquarters by Administration Police when they tried to gain access.
Tear gas canisters were fired at them forcing them to disperse.
According to Francis Thiong’o, a matatu driver who is also a friend of the two, they were allegedly ambushed at gunpoint and Chege’s car was later found in Gilgil with the rear and side windows smashed.
“We have not heard about the two ever again since then and the police seem to have gone silent on the matter,” claimed Thiong’o.
The disappearance of the two has caused tension and confusion in the town, with a lot of people reading mischief in their alleged disappearance.
“This is not just an ordinary act of crime but we are afraid to speak about it for fear of whoever is behind the disappearance,” said a Nakuru based businessman who is also a aspirant in the 2017 general election.
Chege was very active during the eviction of hawkers from the town centre and also in the relocation of hawkers at their new stalls later.
