A non-governmental organisation has donated over 14,000 textbooks to various schools in Kibera.
Among the beneficiaries were the Cheery Children Centre and Raila Education Centre which received books.
The NGO mainly targets schools in Kibera as the availability of learning materials in the area is a challenge. The organisation strives to ensure that such materials are available to schools in marginalised areas.
“For the children of this country to benefit fully from free and compulsory education, textbooks and other learning materials should be tax-free,” said Onyango, one of the teachers at the centres.
Onyango added that zero rating learning materials will make them affordable to schools and parents.
He further called on the government not to tax learning materials brought in by well-wishers and donors into the country noting that this will help cultivate a reading culture.
