Youth in Nyalenda have appealed to the national government to revive the slum upgrading programme in a bid to improve their lives.
Through their leader Harris Okello, the youth said the National Youth Service project was beneficial and ever since it was suspended, many have remained jobless.
Okello said through the project, many people had started leading better lives as basic amenities had been improved.
"During the last phase of the upgrade, sanitation had improved and people had began accessing clean water. Now, sanitation is deteriorating and something needs to be done urgently," he said.
Okello said unemployment might lead young people into crime and drugs.
"Crime and drugs are the option many turn to in case of unemployment. We are urging the government to ensure we do not get to this point, "the youth leader said.
Okello who spoke to this writer on the phone,Saturday, urged the central government to ensure transparency and accountability in the whole project to ensure scandals do not rock the exercise.
"As we look forward to the next phase, we don't want to hear of any other corruption scandal. We are also calling on the government to expand the project to other towns to ensure that youth get jobs,"said Okello.
