Nyamache Sub-County Culture and Social Service officer has said the unlawful practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) has drastically reduced in the region due to the stiffened penalties by the Kenyan Law.
Dinah Nyakundi condemned those still engaging in the practice saying they have misplaced values.
Speaking in her office on Monday, Nyakundi called on the public to obey the law by shunning the exercise.
"Despite our culture's diverse nature, FGM is still illegal under the laws of our country and we have to follow the law. Those using cultural beliefs to conflict the Kenyan law have no space in the current society,” said Nyakundi.
The officer hailed the current education system for sensitising young girl on the dangers of the exercise, adding that the sensitisation campaigns have helped in curbing the practice in the region.
She further urged members of the public to be vigilant and report any incidences to the nearest authorities for appropriate action to be taken against the culprits.
"We are proud of our education system because our girls no longer fall for their parents' demands, unless they are forced to. We urge the public to report such cases to the authorities in a bid to protect our girls,” said Nyakundi.
