Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Nyamira County director, William Mayuya has urged area residents to plant more trees during the El Nino season.

Speaking in Nyamira during the launch of tea planting programme on Thursday, Mayuya regretted that there was increasing climatic change that was affecting rainfall patterns and a significant reduction in the number of wild animals.

Mayuya said that though the public is getting support from the both the county and National Government, residents have not fully appreciated the importance of planting trees.

“We have in the past talked to the public on the importance of tree planting but as time goes by the number of trees is decreasing now and again,” said Mayuya.

Mayuya said all the farmers in the area should embrace the 'cut-one-plant-two' culture so to cumulatively increase the number of trees.

He regretted that if the trend of cutting down trees continues without subsequent replacement, there will be adverse climatic effects.
