Gatundu North sub-county commissioner has called on the residents of the area to embrace the Nyumba Kumi initiative as a way of tackling crime in society.

Speaking during a meeting with the sub-county Nyumba Kumi officials in Kamwangi on Wednesday, Daniel Nyamiti said that security is a shared mandate of all people living in Kenya and people must be vigilant and report any suspicious character or activity to the security personnel so as to prevent crime.

"When the president stated that security starts with each and every person, he meant that everyone should participate because the perpetrators of crime are people who live amongst the community and if people note and report early most criminal activities can be prevented," he told the officials.

Nyamiti called on the volunteers to have passion in their new role as it is them who will guide the standards of law and order in their communities and cautioned them of sidelining any member of the community or those in authority.

"Volunteers are not employed but work for the community for a small allowance," Nyamiti stressed.

He explained the objectives, legal framework and the misconceptions riddling the security initiative that has seen major success in neighbouring countries.

He urged all the residents to be on the lookout of crime perpetrators citing that every Kenyan had a duty to play in ending vices.

The members are drawn from each sub-location of the county and will work in committees at the sub-location level.
