Two elected leaders from Kisumu have attributed the low voter registration turn out in Kisumu to poor communication by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission on where the exercise is taking place.
Kisumu County Women Representative Rose Nyamunga said it is sad to walk to the polling stations and only find the clerks sleeping because nobody is going to register.
She has had to skip parliamentary sessions sensitise voters to participate in the exercise, she told this writer.
“I am now going in every ward in Kisumu combining both civic education with push for voter registration because the turn-out is not pleasing,” she said.
A week since the exercise kicked off, Kisumu has only registered slightly over 10,000 voters.
Senator Anyang’ Nyong’o said there was need for more and serious publicity of the exercise to be done and also voters should be told a day before so that they are aware on where to go and register.
“IEBC should improve information to people regarding where the registration is on a daily basis to avoid confusion,” said Nyong’o.
He stated that individually, he has made arrangements for radio announcements in one of the local radio stations, Sky FM, which will be telling voters where to go and register from.
During the weekend, Coalition for Reforms and democracy leader Raila Odinga pleaded with Nyanza residents to register in large numbers as voters, since that will help him clinch the presidency.
