The government’s Nyumba Kumi initiative has received yet another boost after a retired senior paramount chief challenged Kenyans to embrace it.
Speaking on Thursday at a funeral ceremony in Nyaronge village, Nyamira county, Mr Justus Ong’era argued that the idea was not knew since it had been practiced before by chiefs and their assistants.
He said the initiative will substantially help since people would be able to identify strangers and report to the authorities for further questioning and monitoring of their conduct.
“Sometimes I find it ridiculous that we oppose ever government policy. The Nyumba Kumi initiative will fit in the current set up of the society and help us deal with crimes substantially. It’s not a new idea as some people try to argue because even during my time, we practiced it at a local level and it really worked,” he said.
Ong’era also said the initiative will completely render criminals redundant since the government through people, will identify them and take an appropriate action.
“For a long time, we have blamed the government of allegedly being unable to improve security among us. But now, with this initiative, we will be able to corner those criminals and submit them to the authorities for an action,” he added.
He also urged the government to incorporate former provincial administrators in the security set up given their vast experiences in the matters security.
