Orange Democratic Movement officials in Borabu have launched a door to door voter registration campaign targeting youths and women from the region.
The team, led by Youth League leader Moseti Bwongeri, agreed to reach every household in the region to ensure all eligible voters register during the month long exercise.
Ongeri, who spoke to the reporter after Tuesday’s meeting said the strategy would help by a larger extent since they will be able to interact with the voter and explain importance of participating in the exercise.
“The truth is IEBC has done little sensitisation or civic education exercises. We thought it would be effective if we visit every house hold to ensure people register in numbers. We know there is a section of people are usually reluctant to participate in polls and think we will get a chance to give them a few lectures on the importance of registering as voters,” he said.
The youths volunteered two vehicles to ferry people from distant places to nearby registration centres and blasted IEBC for failing to deliver more BVR kits to the constituency.
“Some of our friends have volunteered two vehicles which will be ferrying people from distant places to registration centers. Most of our registration centers are far apart and I think this is where IEBC messes. However, we are optimistic as ODM youths that we will persuade more youths and women to register so that they participate in elections,” he added.
They also challenged IEBC to hold more civic education on need to participate in national polls arguing the region resisters dismal turn out during elections.
“This should not be the end of everything. As volunteers we will ensure the door to door exercise succeeds. However, it’s important that IEBC launches civic education to emphasize need to vote. It will be useless to target large number of voters who after all do not show up during polls,” he said.
