Kisii county governor James Ongwae has recognised women's contribution to development in the county.
He made the remarks while celebrating with women on Tuesday during the World Women Day.
"We as a County celebrate the many milestones on the road to gender equality," said Ongwae.
"And recommits ourselves to fight for the rights and opportunities of women and girls in our County," he said.
"Empowering women isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do. When women succeed, our County will be more secure, and more prosperous," said the governor.
"Over the last year, we’ve seen women and girls inspiring communities and the entire county. I’m proud of my administration’s efforts to promote gender equality in our procurement and the tendering system where 30 percent of the tender awards have been allocated to women and youth," he added.
"As a County, we’ve launched new efforts to promote women’s economic empowerment and political participation, and to strengthen our commitment to helping more women participate in construction and the running of the county government," said Ongwae.
We are promoting food security initiatives that recognise the rights and needs of women farmers and ensuring that women and girls are at the center of health programs," added Ongwae.
"And we will continue to focus on empowering women and girls in all county projects and programmes. Together we can make even more progress," he said.
