Nyamira County Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee chairman has denied allegations that his committee was being compromised to alter a report in favor of individuals accused of corruption.
This comes a day after a section of county leaders led by aspiring Nyamira Senator Okong’o Omogeni accused the committee of soliciting money from accused individuals in exchange of vindicating them over graft enquiries.
Speaking at Guardian Hotel on Sunday during an interview with this writer, Ezra Mochiemo, who also represents Magombo Ward defended his committee against the said wrong doings and blamed the executive for delaying in implementing a number of reports.
“My committee has never been compromised and it constitutes people with high integrity. We have been working tirelessly to investigate issues, we table them, assembly passes them but the executive fails to implement the reports. We do thorough jobs without bias,” he said.
He cited two instances in which the committee investigated the conduct of former speaker Peter King’oina and recommended his removal from office and the recent suspension of six senior county officials.
“We successfully probed the former speaker and he was removed from office over the Sh30 million saga. We recently recommended removal of six senior officials from the county government. So, whoever thinks we can be compromised is day dreaming,” he said.
Mochiemo said the public was not likely to get an official report over allegations of corruption in the defunct county council since it was cumbersome to get crucial documents to ascertain the claims.
“We have tried to get crucial documents to scrutinise the spending of the county council but it seems most of the records are no longer available. It’s difficult to probe those in question since most of them have passed away and we don’t want to give incomplete reports,” he said.
