Parents in Athi River town have decried the high cost of school items as schools re-open for first term.
The parents included those with children in both primary and secondary schools.
They said most of the items needed by students were too expensive to afford.
“We are surprised to realise how prices of most of the important items required by children returning to schools have been inflated by several businessmen in Athi River town,” said Claudia Mbote.
Ms Mbote, a parent in one the schol's in the town with four school going children, two in upper primary and others in high school said it was unfair for such increments to be effected.
She said the cost of educating children would go up if the increment was tolerated arguing that some of the high schools had equally increased their fees in spite of the state’s order.
George Onger, a parents representative in another school in the sub county said he was forced to buy school uniforms, stationery alongside other personal effects for his daughter in form two at exorbitant prices due to increased demand of the items.
Another parent, Nancy Mueni, said children's education had become too expensive to bear in the region hence called on relevant authorities to intervene in a bid to save parents from what she termed extortion.
The parents talked to this reporter differently in Athi River town on Monday.
