Parents in Soweto village, Kibera have been warned against keeping their children at home when they should be in school.
Speaking at Soweto shopping centre in Kibera this morning, Susan Mwende, a resident said that a number of parents in the area have not been taking their children to school and instead let the children idle at home for no apparent reason.
"As a parent I am disappointed that some parents have taken advantage of the hard economic status in the country and are now allowing their children to stop going to school claiming it is due to lack of money. This is a big shame to parents,” said Mwende.
She said that education is the future for children and nothing can substitute the role it plays. She said that no parent can claim they are unable to educate their children when there are bursaries and scholarships everywhere and primary education is free despite the small money parents are asked to pay by the school management.
Mwende further asked relevant authorities such as the area chief and other leaders, to deal strictly with parents who fail to take their children to school which is against the rights of children to get a basic education.
