Kisii OCPD Tom Mutisya has urged pedestrians to be careful when using roads to avoid being involved in accidents.

In an interview with this writer after a grisly road accident near Daraja Moja junction in Kisii Town on Tuesday that led to loss of five lives, Mutisya noted that a good number of road accident casualties were pedestrians.

He challenged pedestrians to obey traffic rules to avoid being involved in accidents.

He said the casualties will be extremely minimised if pedestrians took personal responsibility by obeying traffic rules.

“In the short time I have been at Kisii, most accident casualties are pedestrians which is very disappointing. Pedestrians should also ensure they obey traffic rules so that we minimise such cases. It’s always important to keep right so that you can see an oncoming vehicle,” he said.

He said by pedestrians observing the road regulations, it will be easier for them to even challenge for payment of damages whenever they survive accidents.

“When they follow traffic rules, it’s even easier even for the families or themselves in case they survive to challenge for damages in court. Otherwise all we need is being vigilant when using our roads for the sake of our own safety,” he added.

Mutsya was however delighted that no pedestrian was hurt in the Tuesday’s accident and urged road users to always take road safety as their personal responsibility.
