Two medical practitioners were arrested Tuesday morning at Kebirigo market in Nyamira County after being caught with bio-medical materials believed to be properties of Nyamira County public hospitals.
This comes after the department of health under the leadership of chief health officer Dr Douglas Bosire launched a crackdown to recover medical drugs believed to be smuggled from the county’s health facilities to private clinics.
Speaking after the successful event, aggrieved Bosire said the crackdown will continue and the culprits will have their practicing licenses revoked and subsequently arraigned in court.
“We have managed to impound a number of bio-medical materials from two clinics and the two people have been arrested by Nyamira police. We want them investigated and their medical practicing licenses revoked. We have to protect public resources. The drugs are for the public and whoever will be found in possession will be sacked,” Bosire said.
He urged members of the public to report whenever they are served with drugs with special seals of the county government in private hospitals.
“What these people (smugglers) are doing is to secretly smuggle the drugs to their private entities and sell them exorbitantly to the public. It’s upon members of the public to report to us in time so that we take action. What’s important is that the two culprits have been arrested and will give us information about the illegal business,” he said.
Bosire revealed that two top officials from Nyamira Level Five hospital were under investigations on smuggling related cases and said he will reveal their names once investigations are concluded.
