Polio vaccination for children under the age of five years in Gatundu North has resumed after Jamhuri holiday.

The vaccination saw 3,500 children vaccinated before the vaccinating officers broke for Jamhuri day celebrations. According to George Wainaina a health administrator in Mataara where the exercise will be done for two days, the program will help in the prevention of diseases.

"We are resuming the exercise today after Jamhuri holiday celebrations. The number of vaccinated children before we went for the holiday was 3,500 and we expect the number to rise to 7,000 before Wednesday this week," Wainaina said.

Wainaina said that parents in Mataara had noted the essence of availing their children for vaccination citing that the area is expected to have many children vaccinated from Gituamba ward.

He refuted fears that polio vaccination was administered by unqualified personnel citing that the youths who are helping the doctors and nurses were vetted before they began the job.

"We have youths who are helping our doctors in the administration of the crucial vaccine who are not qualified for the course, but their work is to help the qualified doctors. Parents should not fear as the vaccine has been well checked and passed for administration by the ministry of health," he added.

Wainaina who was speaking from Mataara dispensary on Monday during the distribution of the vaccine urged parents to cooperate with the vaccine administering officers.
