Democratic Party Kiambu County chairman Charles Kabucho has urged political parties to adopt the two-thirds gender rule and sponsor women for various elective posts in 2017 general election.
Speaking in Thika town on Wednesday, Kabucho said that women still remain under represented and urged them to come out and seek nominations for various elective seats through the existing political parties.
"It is evident that despite creation of women seats by the new constitution, women in this country are still under-represented and as political parties we should seek to narrow this deficit by embracing the two-thirds gender rule where we sponsor more women for various elective posts," said Kabucho.
Kabucho mentioned lack of a level playing ground in Kenyan politics as a reason why many women fail to seek elective positions for fear of losing to their male counterparts, whom he said, most of the time have influence and financial muscle.
"We must seek to create an environment in our political parties where women feel that they are treated as their male colleagues so that they can have confidence in seeking these political seats," he said.
He urged women in Thika and Kiambu County as whole to come out and seek political seats in the County Assembly as well as Parliament in 2017, saying they were equal to the task.
