Performance contracting and appraisal for principals in Nakuru County has successfully been done.
Speaking during a one-day awareness workshop at Afraha High School, Teachers Service Commission county director Angetta Kitheka said all teachers including those employed by schools’ boards are expected to comply with the guidelines.
“The exercise is being done countrywide. We expect all teachers in public schools in the county to act in accordance with the guidelines in the performance appraisal forms. They only enhance the issues that have always been there, there is nothing much new,” she said.
The director said the performance appraisal will make teachers evaluation easier as well as upgrade standards of education in public schools.
She directed all the sub-county TSC heads in Nakuru to swiftly conduct performance contracting and appraisals for head teachers.
Teachers will be evaluated on how they prepare schemes of work, lessons plans and how they follow syllabus according to appraisal forms.
They will also be assessed on their ability to make learning aids, observance, time management and use of information technology to advance their skills.
Schools’ heads will be evaluated on implementation of strategic plans, resource management, service delivery and maintenance of facilities among other areas.
Performance appraisal is aimed to achieve among others improved performance, effective learning outcome, identification of performance gaps and establishment of fair evaluation and reporting.
Kitheka said the appraisal guidelines also ensure TSC has committed itself in providing adequate teaching force.
“TSC is committing itself. It is an open system that gives room to dialogue,” she said. The guidelines have in addition ensured measures to curb corruption in schools and enhanced community participation in schools running.
