Kisumu Central MP Ken Obura has now given county governor Jack Ranguma a 14 days ultimatum to remove the eyesore garbage dump site at Kachok along Kisumu-Nairobi highway.

Obura said the garbage filth was chocking and must be relocated elsewhere to save the people of Kisumu from contracting diseases.

He said that there were a number of learning institutions and other amenities around the area that were affected by the presence of the dump site.

“We have secondary schools there, a national polytechnic and a supermarket and this dumpsite is really affecting them. I want to tell Ranguma to speedily organise removal of that garbage from there,” he said.

Speaking to the press on Monday after issuing bursary cheques worth Sh14 million to needy students in Kisumu, Obura said the lakeside city risked losing out hosting Kenya Premier League matches as a result of the garbage.

“I hear Kenya Premier League have issued threats to ban league matches from being played in Kisumu due to the dump site. I want to join them and call for the relocation of that garbage,” he said.

Obura who issued the ultimatum with unspecified consequences said he will pursue the matter and ensure the garbage is relocated.

Two weeks ago, Kenya Premier League warned that Kisumu will not be hosting the league unless the dumpsite is relocated elsewhere.

They cited bad smell as one major hindrance and termed street urchins at the site as a threat to security.

Attempts to relocate the dumpsite have occasionally hit a snag.

The county government of Kisumu had purchased land in Muhoroni constituency for the relocation but the area MP Onyango Koyoo declined.
