Kenya Red Cross Society has raised an alarm of possible outbreak of waterborne diseases in flood affected villages within Kisumu County.
The society manager for Kisumu and Siaya counties, Jacob Kitiyo, said this is as a result of stagnant water in the affected areas.
Kitiyo said the most vulnerable group is the lactating mothers, pregnant women, children and the elderly persons.
“These people are prone to cholera, malaria, bilharzia and other related water borne diseases,” he said.
Speaking after touring the affected areas on Monday, Kitiyo said they have a team of volunteers at the flood prone areas to monitor the events.
He said they have given out mosquito nets and some water tabs to the affected families.
“Our response is quick and we are given non food items that can help to prevent these outbreaks because it might be a disaster,” he said.
Kitiyo said families are still unable to move back to their homes from the evacuation centres.
He said the area is now not receiving much rain noting that the flash floods that affect the locals originate from Nandi and Kericho counties.
“We fear that there is much rain in the neighbouring countries and that always give us problems at the downstream,” he said.
Kitiyo says most houses were destroyed by the floods and will need re-construction before some of the families might to move back to their homes.
