Residents of Nyaribari Masaba have urged the county government of Kisii to give infrastructure first priority in a bid to improve agricultural productivity in the county.
Speaking on Wednesday at Kiamokama market, the residents, led by Laban Chweya, a politician, blamed the county government for delaying in rehabilitating feeder roads in the region, making it difficult for them to transport their produce to nearby markets.
The residents said many farmers incur huge losses due to the impassible roads in the region, as many transporters avoid the region.
“Good roads are essential in any agricultural economy and we are surprised that the county government has not done enough in our constituency. A number of feeder roads are impassible making many of our farmers incur immense loses. The situation is dire and might escalate if nothing substantial is done,” said Chweya.
The residents urged Governor James Ongwae to rehabilitate feeder roads in the region, as they are under the jurisdiction of the county government.
“The Governor has no excuse whatsoever and this is the time that we want to see change in our road networks. Many of this roads are under the care of the county government hence we demand quick action to be taken,” he said.
The residents claimed the governor had given urban centres first priority leaving people at the grassroots battling with poor roads.
“We are not saying that Governor Ongwae has not done much but all we want is to see our road networks improved. We are an agricultural county therefore, impassible roads affect our economy directly,” said Chweya.
